In-person class at Fox Chapel Area High School
Effective Fall 2025, there are no refunds if you cancel your registration in a one-night class. Students assume all risk for changes in their personal schedules.
NEW! Most hikers hit the trail carrying everything including the kitchen sink, but a heavy pack can quickly take the joy out of time spent in nature. In this one-night class, you will learn to stop packing for “just in case” and start packing for “just what you need.” Instructor Linn Kotermanski has had decades of experience planning and completing multi-day backpacking trips in locations such as the Grand Canyon and the Appalachian Trail.
Perfect both for those planning a strenuous day hike or a multi-day adventure, this class will cover:
- The Minimalist Wardrobe: Layer effectively, so you can carry fewer clothes without sacrificing safety or comfort.
- Food and Hydration: Develop simple strategies for lightweight meal planning and efficient water purification methods that won't weigh you down.
- Essentials: Select the right gear (backpacks, shelters, sleeping bags, and pads) for easier days and comfortable overnights on the trail.
- Essentials (Minus the Sink): Streamline your footwear and toiletries for maximum utility.
- Trail Stewardship: Understand essential Leave-No-Trace principles and Trail Etiquette to ensure the wilderness stays wild for everyone.
Whether you are a seasoned trekker looking to downsize or a beginner wanting to start lean, you will walk away with the confidence to adopt a streamlined, minimalist approach that lets you focus on the view, not your aching shoulders.
