cardinals in winterNEW! Transform your understanding of winter birding and discover how to make your backyard a sanctuary for both year-round and wintering birds. This online class moves past relying on bird feeders, revealing how a rich natural landscape is the best food source you can provide.

Join Melinda Guinn, a local volunteer with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and Tree Pittsburgh, as she discusses:

  • Meadows and Woodlands in Winter: Discover the unique birds found in different winter habitats. Learn to observe and appreciate the subtle differences in behavior and foraging strategies of species in open meadows versus dense woodlands.
  • The Critical Leafy Layer: Leaf litter is a “magical zone” beneath the trees. Learn why this layer is a vital, food-rich habitat for birds.
  • Citizen Science in Action: Understand the value of key winter bird monitoring projects and find out how you can take part yourself.

This class is perfect for bird enthusiasts of all ages, nature lovers, gardeners, and homeowners who want to adopt a more ecologically minded approach to supporting local wildlife in the winter. No prior birding experience is required.
