NEW! Spring is here, and now is the perfect time to start thinking about gardening. That includes not just what to put in the ground, but also which invasive plants, shrubs, and trees to avoid.
Join Melinda Guinn, enthusiastic native gardener and volunteer for Tree Pittsburgh, for an outdoor walk focused on plants that are invasive to Western Pennsylvania. Melinda has transformed her own yard by removing invasive plants and instead opting for native species. As a result, she has turned her yard into a haven for beautiful butterflies, buzzing bees, and migrating birds who find insects in the leaf litter.
This class will take place entirely outside at Fairview Elementary School. Melinda will lead a walk on a short trail behind the school to point out both invasive species as well as native plants that thrive in our area.
During the walk and the discussion that follows, this class will cover:
- Identifying common invasive plant species
- How these species cause problems for native plants and animals
- Safely removing invasive plants to minimize environmental damage
- Alternative native plants that thrive in backyard gardens
- Ways to get involved in local conservation programs that create stable, thriving native ecosystems
Wear shoes that can get dirty, come dressed appropriately for the weather, and be prepared to walk on uneven terrain.
