Description

In-person class at Fox Chapel Area High School.

  • No class on March 30 and April 27.

hand building with clay

For students with prior experience throwing on the wheel. Limited class size guarantees each student a private wheel.

Join professional potter Karen McKee for this open studio series focused exclusively on wheel throwing. Bring your project ideas and have fun exploring your creativity, refining your techniques, and bringing your clay visions to life! Karen will be available to help you create projects of higher artistic focus and skill.

Students will:

  • Create up to 10 finished pieces (sizes between 3" × 3" and 12" × 12").
  • Focus on craftsmanship and surface decoration techniques, learning new ways to create, glaze and finish your work.
  • Enjoy all clay, glazes, and firing costs included in the class fee.

Kiln space is limited this spring, so this session is designed to give each participant ample time to experiment, perfect, and complete their pieces. Additional pieces cannot be fired or held for future sessions, ensuring fairness and a smooth workflow for all students.

If kiln capacity improves during the semester, students may have the opportunity to create extra pieces, giving you even more room to explore your ideas!

Come enjoy relaxed, creative nights out and leave with beautifully finished pottery that you can truly call your own.

FCAAE uses a clay that is microwave-, dishwasher-, and oven-safe — so you’ll go home with lasting pieces you can enjoy every day. Your class fee includes 25 lb bag of clay, all glazes and firings for pieces created using this initial bag of clay.

  • Need more clay? Students wishing to make additional pieces are welcome to do so by purchasing an extra bag of clay. The fee of $50 includes another 25 lb bag of clay, additional glazes, and firing of extra pieces.

Wheel throwing is a fun and creative skill that requires practice, patience, and a willingness to let go of perfectionism.

  • You will get messy so dress accordingly.
  • Short nails are best to avoid gouging your clay.
