collage of student workFor beginners as well as anyone with experience working in clay. Join professional potter Karen McKee and create unique, beautiful pieces of art.

Experience working with clay? Bring your project ideas and have fun during this three-hour open studio time. Hand build with clay and/or throw on the wheel. The instructor will be available to help you create projects of higher artistic focus and skill.

New to clay? Beginners will create functional and decorative finished pieces by working on instructor-led projects. Karen will provide lessons, demonstrations, and hands-on guidance teaching the proper techniques of hand building with clay:

  • preparing your slab
  • slipping and scoring to join your clay together for a seamless, strong hold
  • glazing techniques
  • applying texture to pieces
  • decorating options

FCAAE uses stoneware clay, a higher fired clay that is more durable and also microwave, dishwasher and oven safe. All pieces will be fired to cone 6 for a lasting, functional piece of art that you can enjoy every day! Students may create pieces that have a minimum size of 3" x 3" and a maximum size of 12" x 12".

Fee includes 25 lb bag of clay, all glazes and firings for pieces created using this initial bag of clay.

  • Need more clay? Students wishing to make additional pieces are welcome to do so by purchasing an extra bag of clay. The fee of $48 includes another 25 lb bag of clay, additional glazes, and firing of extra pieces.
