NEW! The vast majority of the world’s countries are experiencing a demographic revolution: dramatic, sustained, and likely irreversible population aging. States’ median ages are steadily increasing as the number of people ages 65 and older skyrockets. Although the domestic costs of aging will be substantial, population aging has a major yet largely unrecognized international benefit: it significantly reduces the likelihood of international war.
Join Duquesne University Professor of Political Science Mark Haas as he discusses findings from his latest book, The Geriatric Peace: Population Aging and the Decline of War. He will explain why population aging will be a powerful force for international peace. Mark is one of the world’s leading scholars on demography and conflict.
Topics include:
- Why and to what extent the world is aging.
- How aging will shape countries’ economies, their military power, and their willingness to go to war.
- How the aging crisis is affecting China and the United States in particular.
Come with questions! Mark will save time at the end for Q&A.
