In-person class at Fox Chapel Area High School.

  • No class on March 31 due to FCASD's spring break.

clay hand buildingNEW! Join professional potter Karen McKee for this series focused exclusively on hand building. Perfect for beginners as well as anyone with experience working in clay. This open studio is designed to help you explore your creativity, refine your techniques, and bring your clay visions to life!

Experience working with clay? Bring your project ideas! The instructor will be available to help you create projects of higher artistic focus and skill.

New to clay? Beginners will create functional and decorative finished pieces by working on instructor-led, hand-building projects. Karen will provide lessons, demonstrations, and hands-on guidance teaching the proper techniques of hand building with clay:

  • preparing your slab
  • slipping and scoring to join your clay together for a seamless, strong hold
  • glazing techniques
  • applying texture to pieces
  • decorating options

Students will:

  • Create up to 10 finished pieces (sizes between 3" × 3" and 12" × 12").
  • Focus on craftsmanship and surface decoration techniques, learning new ways to create, glaze and finish your work.
  • Enjoy all clay, glazes, and firing costs included in the class fee.

Kiln space is limited this spring, so this session is designed to give each participant ample time to experiment, perfect, and complete their pieces. Additional pieces cannot be fired or held for future sessions, ensuring fairness and a smooth workflow for all students.

If kiln capacity improves during the semester, students may have the opportunity to create extra pieces, giving you even more room to explore your ideas!

Come enjoy relaxed, creative nights out and leave with beautifully finished pottery that you can truly call your own.

FCAAE uses a clay that is microwave-, dishwasher-, and oven-safe — so you’ll go home with lasting pieces you can enjoy every day. Your class fee includes 25 lb bag of clay, all glazes and firings for pieces created using this initial bag of clay.

  • Need more clay? Students wishing to make additional pieces are welcome to do so by purchasing an extra bag of clay. The fee of $50 includes another 25 lb bag of clay, additional glazes, and firing of extra pieces.

Class-Specific Notes

No class on March 31 due to FCASD's spring break.
