Description
In-person class at Fox Chapel Area High School.
NEW! Enameling is the art of fusing powdered glass onto metal using high heat and has been used for thousands of years to create eye-catching jewelry. Local artist and jewelry designer Sarah Sindler will provide a hands-on introduction that is perfect for beginners and more experienced artists alike.
During this four-week series, students will gain hands-on experience and learn the foundational skills of enameling on copper sheet:
- Metal Preparation: Safely cut, clean, and prepare the copper to ensure the enamel fuses properly
- Powder Application: Practice multiple techniques for applying the enamel powder to the metal surface
- The Firing Process: Safely operate a kiln or butane torch to fire your pieces
- Basic Color Theory: Understanding the difference between opaque and transparent enamels and how they interact with the copper and with each other
- Surface Effects: Experiment with simple decorative techniques such as ombre, stenciling, or sgraffito
Sarah will have additional supplies available for purchase to turn your finished pieces into pendants or keychains. Join us to unlock the possibilities of color and glass and create your own miniature works of art.
