Description
In-person class at Fox Chapel Area High School.
NEW! Beginner friendly—no knitting experience necessary!
Are you curious about knitting but not sure where to start? In this hands-on class, you’ll learn the basic techniques you need to begin knitting with confidence. You’ll have the opportunity to work with both straight and circular needles and choose the type you prefer.
Join accomplished fiber artist Randi Voss and spend three weeks learning these essentials knitting skills:
- Hold and work with knitting needles
- Cast on using the long-tail and knitted methods
- Knit and purl
- Increase and decrease stitches
- Read a basic knitting pattern
- Explore different types of yarn, including cotton, acrylic, wool, silk and linen
The first week will focus on getting comfortable with knitting needles and practicing the basic stitches. As you practice, you'll develop muscle memory, find your knitting rhythm and learn to maintain consistent tension. In the following weeks, put your new skills to work as you create a simple cotton washcloth to keep or give as a gift. While this series is designed to give you plenty of practice time and the opportunity to leave with a finished project, everyone works at a different pace, so completing the washcloth during the three-week class will depend on attendance and individual knitting speed.
Designed as a small-group class, you’ll receive plenty of personal guidance and hands-on help, making it easier to learn, ask questions and build confidence along the way. And you’ll leave with the foundation to continue exploring the wonderful world of knitting!
Class fee includes all practice materials and the cotton yarn needed to create your washcloth.
Bonus: students are invited to bring yarn crafts from home and ask questions on their materials, construction of the item and/or tips for remaking or mending a project.
Class-Specific Notes
The instructor will provide knitting needles — both straight and circular — for your use the first night so you can experiment and determine your preference. Then you can purchase either straight or circular knitting needles for your use throughout the rest of the series.
