In-person class at Fox Chapel Area High School
Beginner friendly! No experience necessary!
NEW! Still life painting is an art form that requires careful attention to color, light and shadow, and subject composition.
Local artist Elisabeth Ridenour returns to teach this four-week class designed for beginners interested in deepening their understanding of watercolors through still life. Each session focuses on strengthening foundational techniques, improving observation skills, and learning how to apply watercolor thoughtfully and with control. By the end of the course, students will complete a still life study similar to the image on the right.
Through demonstrations and hands-on instruction, Elisabeth will provide students will the framework to compose and create still life watercolor paintings:
- Understand watercolor materials and how they behave on paper.
- Improve observation skills, with guidance on seeing shapes, values, and details more accurately.
- Develop practical strategies for controlling watercolor
- Learn foundational techniques such as wet-on-dry, wet-on-wet, lifting, and layering, and recognizing when to use each.
- Experiment with basic color theory and introductory color mixing.
Whether you are picking up a paintbrush for the first time or continuing your artistic journey, this series will help further your understanding of watercolor. Each class will include plenty of time to practice new skills.
